French carmaker Renault has unveiled its next new offering for India, the Renault Triber. This is the first of four new cars the company is going to bring in the next two years.
The Triber sits on a heavily modified version of the Renault kwid’s CMF-A platform and is specifically designed for the Indian market.
One of the Tribe’s biggest trump card is the space and the modularity it offers i.e. Allowing for up to 200mm legroom. It can seat seven adults, The second row has options of reclining, sliding, can be tumbled and folded.
The third row has 2 removable seats. It is provided with dedicated AC vents and power sockets for all passengers in each and every row in the car.
The Triber offers 625 liters of boot space when the third row is folded and when not it is 84 liters in the seven-seater arrangement. When in 6 seat configuration it gives 320 liters of boot space, totally shear mobility that Renault pitches it can be seen over here.
Quality levels are up too as compared to Renault kwid. The highlights like its silver-inserts, the interior gets a dual-tone color scheme of black and beige combination dash layout to feel well placed. A 3.5-inch LCD screen for the MID and an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system, which is larger than the 7.0-inch unit on all other Renaults. The unit comes with Apple carplay and Android Auto, Some unique AI features are also included like driving-style coaching and driver economy rating. The third row can be removed altogether to liberate up to 625 liters of boot space. Other major features are a new 8-inch touchscreen with Android Auto/Apple Carplay and video playback. The digital instrument cluster also stands out with its three virtual dials. There’s keyless entry and push-button starts as well.
The Triber trails Renault’s up-to-date design, the large U-shaped grille with a Renault logo in the middle. On the dimension front Tiber measures (L x W x H)3990 x 1739 x 1643. The headlamps are swept back and look quite modern and stylish, They also come with projector beams. The LED DRLs are positioned on the bumper.
The car weighs 947 kg and wheelbase is 2636mm and ground clearance is 182mm.
Imposing and muscular bonnet, roof rails, a squared-off rear section, side plastic molds on the wheel arches give it a bit of rugged feel. The car has very fewer overhangs to likely offer lots of space in this sub 4m size.
The upright stance and a step-raised roof also ads on to the practicality quotient in the car. The 15-inch Alloy wheels are beautifully designed and available on top spec variant and standard wheel size is of 14-inch.
It gets an upgraded version of Renault Kwid’s present 1.0-liter variant that has a three-cylinder petrol engine churns out 72hp and 96Nm of torque. Renault officials said that this is the same configuration of the engine used in international models like the Renault Clio and Dacia Sandero.
Renault has tweaked this engine’s performance and gear ratios for better response, as triber’s 947kg is quite heavier than 200kg that of Kwid. It’s still to be seen how this engine fairs out as when fully loaded with 7 passengers, the Triber might be not good enough in terms of power and could be left asking for more of it.
The main difference between triber and Kwid is that this Triber gets a dual VVT system which provides more performance out of the same engine. A BSVI-compliant engine is still due to be introduced.
The Triber initially will be mated with 2 transmission options i.e. A 5-speed manual gearbox and a 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT). Renault might also launch a more powerful turbocharged 1.0-liter petrol engine later on after initial launch of triber.
It has a good amount of safety pack like There are three-point seat-belts for almost all the passengers and is loaded up to 4 airbags
Pricing and Verdict
The Renault Triber is going to enter the sub-four-meter space to enjoy the tax exemption enjoyed in this segment. The Triber has a great mixture of utility, modularity, and style along with affordability.
At present, it is going to face competition directly with Datsun go+ and upcoming Maruti Suzuki Wagonr. Along with that triber will also have to fight with the B segment hatchbacks, premium hatchbacks, and compact SUVs.
We expect Renault to price the triber aggressively with a starting price of around Rs 5 lakh ex-showroom. It is expected to hit our showrooms in the second half of 2019
